‘New frisking booth for women, restaurant at Patna airport soon’

Patna: The Jayaprakash Narayan International (JPNI) Airport in Patna has been facing issues like severe capacity constraints and lack of infrastructure for a long time now. However, airport director Bhupesh C H Negi promises to make the existing terminal building more comfortable for flyers and talks to Faryal Rumi about the Bihta and Darbhanga airbases as well. Excerpts:
How has your experience as Patna airport director been so far?

I took charge as the director of Patna airport on April 2 and my experience has been great so far. Despite innumerable challenges, I have a strong and cooperative team that works together to satisfy passengers every day.

What challenges are you talking about?

We are witnessing tremendous growth in traffic, but also face issues like capacity constraints and infrastructure concerns. Other challenges include lack of passenger facilities and parking bays.

What is your priority, at present?

My priority is to decongest the existing terminal building and make it more comfortable for flyers till the new one comes up.

What is the status of the new terminal building?

Construction of the terminal building will start after the monsoon season is over. Work on a multi-level car parking area is underway.

What steps are being taken for decongestion of the present terminal building?

As part of our short-term plan, an additional departure gate and frisking booth for women are being constructed at the airport. Besides, the existing terminal building will be modified in the next six to eight months so that flyers have to spend lesser time in the check-in baggage area, security checkpoint and frisking booth. The number of X-ray machines for scanning luggage will also be increased and a full-fledged restaurant developed on the first floor of the security hold area.

Any plans for extension of the runway?

Not yet because of the problem of land availability. However, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has given a proposal in this regard to the state government.
