Power cable snag forced two aircraft to land in dark: Probe

Nagpur: The initial probe into two Indigo Airlines aircraft landing at Nagpur in the dark earlier this month indicates that there was a snag in the cable providing electric supply to runway lights. In a major hazard for passengers, the runway lights had gone off when two Indigo Airlines aircraft were preparing to land here, forcing the planes to land depending solely on the instrument landing system (ILS). The basic probe at the local level revealed the snag in the cable.
Both the affected flights were supposed to land at Mumbai on July 1, but were diverted to Nagpur owing to bad weather conditions. It was raining at Nagpur too on that day, but a number of flights were diverted to the city.
Sources in airport management said the snag points at a major lapse in maintenance of the infrastructure. Cables that supply power to the runway lights often get cut due to works like digging and other wear and tear. The wires have to be joined after that. A source said it was found that the joints were not properly fixed, leading to rain water seeping in and disrupting the power supply.
Even though there is a back up system for the runway lights, even that did not work on that day, sources said. This is because the primary cable, which supplies to the main line as well as back up, was affected. In the normal course the generator should have started right away said a source.
