Air fares to rain-hit Mumbai decrease

Chennai: Air fares to Mumbai have dipped as people are putting off trips due to heavy rain and waterlogging there. The minimum fare is at least Rs 5,000 if booking a day before, but on Tuesday tickets for Thursday and Friday were available for Rs 2,900 going up to Rs 7,000. This despite the railways too cancelling and diverting trains on the Chennai–Mumbai route.

Tickets on early morning flights for Tuesday and Wednesday were selling for Rs 2,635 on Monday night. Morning flights are usually expensive while booking the previous night. Night flights remain comparably expensive as most of these flights are preferred by people who fly to Mumbai to board connecting planes to international destinations. The starting fare is in the range of Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,000 for most days of this week.

Chennai-Mumbai is the busiest route and other airlines have increased services after Jet Airways was grounded. The big demand often keeps the last-minute fares high, while fares are reasonable one to two weeks in advance because of availability of flights. In the last few days though, flights are not full as only those who want to travel urgently for business or those in an emergency are flying to Mumbai, which is facing the brunt of the monsoon, said an airport official.
