Airfares reduce after rail, road connectivity restored

Mangaluru: With the road and train services from Mangaluru being restored, airlines operating from Mangaluru International Airport that made a killing during the floods have pared down their prices. The airfares are now below Rs 2,000 one-way to Bengaluru.
The airlines had hiked the fares to the nearest destinations, especially Bengaluru, by almost three to four times in the second week of August. The fury of monsoon had caused landslides on Charmadi and Shiradi routes, cutting off both road and rail connectivity to Bengaluru and other neighbouring districts.
Usually, airfares to Bengaluru from Mangaluru cost less than 4,000, but during the crisis period, the fares were hovering in excess of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. The fares to other cities like Mumbai and Hyderabad too has seen a steep rise in the same period.
Now with road and rail connectivity established, the prices have fallen sharply to below Rs 2,000 one way, barring the holiday period due to festivities from September 1 to 4, which is at Rs 4,000 one –way.
