Cars parked on airport ramp cause jam

Chennai: The new parking policy at Chennai airport is causing yet another hassle for passengers.
As the airport has allowed free drop at departure terminals and removed the earlier 10-minute limit for cars to exit the premises, cabs have started parking on the elevated ramp located in front of the terminals, to avoid paying fee at the parking lot. This causes congestion of vehicles that arrive to drop departing passengers.

Passengers said that during peak hours, congestion is experienced on the ramp in front of the domestic terminal as cabs which drop passengers do not move on. Instead, they park by the side of the terminal, a little ahead, waiting for a booking. If they drive down the ramp, they have to either exit the campus or enter the parking lot and pay Rs 40. The cabs drive down when they get a booking from the arrival terminal on the ground floor.

On Friday, many cabs were found parked near the domestic terminal on the ramp in the morning and in the afternoon. “The entire area was congested with cars,” said an airline staff.

Kiruba Shankar, who travelled three days ago, said, “There was congestion for about 17–20minutes as the parked cars occupied space available for vehicles to move. It was around 11am. I didn’t have many bags so I got down and walked, but many people, including senior citizens, had to wait.”
