Doctor detained at Bengaluru airport for sexually harassing air hostess

Bengaluru: Security personnel deployed at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru detained a doctor based on allegations of unruly behaviour levelled against by him by an air hostess. The accused, an MD from Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, was taken into custody on Tuesday morning seconds after his Indigo flight from Lucknow to Bengaluru landed at 8:32 am.
In her statement, the air hostess alleged that the doctor sexually harassed her. However, she decided to file only a complaint of 'unruly behaviour' against the passenger. The information was conveyed to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at the Kempegowda International Airport. Personnel arrived at the bay and took the accused to the terminal.
According to a report, a written request from the airline manager to hand over the doctor to the airport police station was received by CISF personnel. The manager also sought that a case of unruly behaviour is registered against the accused. No FIR was filed in this regard since the woman did not want to make a big issue out of it, said an officer with the airport police who added that unruly behaviour is a non-cognizable offence.
Similar instances have been reported from other parts of the country in the past. In March of last year, a 62-year-old passenger was accused of molesting a cabin crew member of Air Vistara. The air hostess had claimed that the airline had taken a hard stance on the subject, stating that it does not tolerate abusive or unruly behaviour by passengers. A case lodged against the accused passenger and he was recommended to be put on the no-fly list (NFL).
