Flyers' plans won't be hit, says Air India after oil cos' threat

New Delhi: Air India on Sunday assured passengers that they need not worry about their travel plans going awry in wake of oil companies' threat to cut off the airline's fuel supply from Friday.
The airline, which has debt and current payables of about Rs 72,000 crore, has approached banks to raise loan of about Rs 2,000 crore based on unutilised sovereign guarantee with it to somehow survive till the fate of the divestment process is known.
"The issues with oil companies are being sorted out and will be resolved soon. Meanwhile, AI has taken all measures to ensure flights are not disrupted and passengers not inconvenienced at all. There is no reason whatsoever for our passengers to be concerned," said AI spokesman Dhananjay Kumar on Sunday.
Oil marketing companies claim dues of about Rs 5,000 crore (with interest) from AI and periodically keep warning of not giving aviation turbine fuel to group airlines, a threat implemented at six non-metro airports for some days recently. AI's Sunday assurance came after last Thursday OMCs threatened to stop fuel supply to AI at six metros - with Delhi and Mumbai being the airline's main hubs - from October 18.
