Typhoon Hagibis: Air India Delhi-Narita flight taking extra fuel so it can refuel at Osaka on return sector

New Delhi: Typhoon Hagibis, which has battered Japan with severe flooding and landslides, has also affected Tokyo’s Narita International Airport. While most flights to and from the airport on Saturday — including India connections — were cancelled, airlines have started resuming the same from Sunday evening.
A senior Air India official said: “We have been told that fuelling facility at Narita has been affected. Japanese authorities told us they can give us fuel at Osaka. So we have taken DGCA permission to operate a flight on Delhi-Narita sector Sunday night with extra fuel. On the return sector, this flight will take off from Narita and take a refuelling halt at Osaka from where it will fly to Delhi.”
In the past few days, AI’s Delhi-Narita was taking a slightly circuitous route to Tokyo to avoid the typhoon.
While AI is the only Indian carrier to fly to Japan, two airlines from there fly to India. A Japan Airlines (JAL) official said Saturday’s flight between Delhi and Narita were cancelled. “We are operating a Delhi-Tokyo flight on Sunday which will operate with some delay,” said the official.
An official of Japanese carrier ANA said: “Our Narita-Delhi flight landed last Friday (Oct 11). Our Delhi-Narita departure time is 1.25 am and that flight could not take off on Saturday (due to the typhoon). This was delayed by 23 hours and supposed to leave at 12.30 am on Sunday. Its departure had to be further postponed to 7.15 pm on Sunday. So we basically combined loads for both day on this flight.”
