Mopa airport operations to begin by 2022: Sawant

Saligao/Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said the government intends to start operations at Mopa international airport by 2022. He was speaking at the inaugural function of the Goa International Travel Mart (GITM) at Arpora on Thursday.
Work on the airport has been suspended ever since the Supreme Court passed an order in January this year.

Highlighting the importance of the tourism, Sawant said the government was looking to boost the sector through investments that would go a long way in developing Goa as a world-class destination. He also spelt out plans of promoting wellness and hinterland tourism.

“After the closure of mining, the government has been focussing on tourism. We are introducing many tourism-related aspects such as golf courses, eco-tourism, medical tourism and sports tourism,” he said. Sawant also reiterated the government’s commitment to keeping tourists safe.

“We are coming up with a new convention centre at Dona Paula that will be equipped with modern facilities,” Sawant added.
After the inaugural event at Arpora, the two-day GITM exhibition at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Taleigao, was thrown open. The business-to-business event showcases the state’s tourism investment potential and brought travel companies, hoteliers, and those engaged in eco-tourism, adventure, wildlife, nightlife, event management, wedding planning, wellness and other leisure enterprises under one roof.
