Smuggled gold worth Rs 24L seized at airport, two held

Hyderabad: Two persons trying to smuggle in 653 grams of gold were arrested at Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport on Wednesday. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths seized the smuggled yellow metal, worth Rs 24.61 lakh, from their possession.
Based on specific intelligence, a DRI team intercepted a passenger who arrived by an Indigo Airlines flight (6E 1406) from Sharjah at the arrival hall of the RGI Airport on Monday night. When subjected to frisking, the DRI team found that the passenger was wearing customised jeans, in which pouches containing gold paste were concealed.
The DRI team removed the gold paste weighing about 843 grams from the pouches, melted it and extracted 653 grams of the precious metal.
