Chennai: In the absence of direct flights to Australia, a huge chunk of passengers from Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai fly to Sri Lankan capital Colombo, which has direct flights to Melbourne. Encouraged by the demand from the three towns in the state, SriLankan Airlines is planning to start flights soon from Colombo to Sydney. The airline will also start flights to Vietnam, another popular destination among travellers from Tamil Nadu.
With more direct flights to many international destinations than in Chennai, Colombo has already emerged as a favourite hub for passengers from Tamil Nadu. SriLankan Airlines, which was seeing a point-to-point demand for travellers from Chennai to Colombo, is seeing an increase in the number of passengers who prefer to travel beyond the capital city. Travel and tour operators say there is a good demand for students, relatives travelling to meet students, leisure travellers, groups going from Chennai to Australia.
SriLankan Airlines regional manager for India V Ravindran said a major driving force for the airline to add more flights to Australia was the demand from Tamil Nadu. “We have flights to Colombo from southern cities in India including Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy. These flights connect to the international flights from Colombo, which makes it convenient for travellers to choose Colombo as a transit hub.” He said around 15 to 20 passengers per flight from Indian cities fly to Australia via Colombo.
