Flyers forgot gold bars, jewellery at Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: In the hurry and rush at the airport, forgetting personal belongings is common, but flyers forgetting gold bars certainly comes across as a shocker. Gold and other precious metal and jewellery are among the many items forgotten by passengers at the city airport. When unclaimed, precious metals are usually auctioned off by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), according to protocol.
Apart from jewellery, the list of unclaimed gold articles at the city airport in 2019 till June, also included three gold bars. Thanks to this, the volume of unclaimed gold items by passengers in 2019 (till June) was as high as 410 gram – a 141.8% spike against 169.5g gold last year. “This year, the unclaimed gold items include three gold bars that cumulatively weigh 300g and therefore, the volume of gold items that remained unclaimed is significantly higher,” said a source. Amid rising cases of gold smuggling owing to high gold prices, sources said that the bars could have remained unclaimed because they had been brought in through unofficial channels.
Gold price stood at Rs 39,180 per 10 gram on Friday. Accordingly, the gold articles that were unclaimed from January to June 2019 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad were worth Rs 16 lakh.
