Mistranslated airport signboard photo is 'morphed', says Airports Authority of India

New Delhi: Actress Shabana Azmi on Thursday shared a photo of a mistranslated sign at Chennai International Airport. The sign that reads "Eating carpet is strictly prohibited" has been circulated widely on social media since 2015. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) responded to the viral picture saying that it is "morphed".

"Farsh par khaana sakht mana hai," the sign reads in Hindi. It translates to "Eating on the floor is strictly prohibited." However, the word "on" is missing in the English translation on the signboard as it reads "Eating carpet is strictly prohibited".
The AAI said that the image is "morphed" and requested people to not circulate the photo without proper fact-checking.
The Airports Authority of India on Friday tweeted, "Important Announcement from #AAI Since 2015, this morphed image shown has been doing rounds time and again. Requesting everyone not to circulate any such photographs without proper fact-checking."

While sharing the photo on Instagram, Azmi wrote, "Really ?!!!" The post has garnered over 3,500 likes and several comments. It has amused netizens.
The sign was shared by a businessman named Justin Ross Lee back in 2105 on social media.
