CAB protests: Flights cancelled, airlines promise refund

Kolkata: All four flights to Dibrugarh from Kolkata and at least one flight to Guwahati were cancelled in the wake of ongoing anti-CAB protests in Assam on Thursday.

Guwahati and Dibrugarh, the epicentre of the unrest, has been placed under indefinite curfew with Army being called in at four places as the northeastern state leapt into chaos over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.

Later in the evening, IndiGo’s evening flight to Guwahati, which was to carry 120 passengers, was cancelled as well. Incidentally, the airline’s Wednesday night flight at 9.20pm to Guwahati from Kolkata was also cancelled because of the curfew. The 180 odd passengers were adjusted in another morning flight on Thursday.

With the Assam situation keeping all airlines on their toes, many issued advisories and notifications offering full refund and waiver of cancellation/change fees for all flights to and from Guwahati and Dibrugarh for the next few days. All airlines also issued a caution, asking fliers to check the flight status on these sectors before leaving home.
IndiGo Airlines tweeted at 4.29pm under a header ‘Assam Alert’, stating: “Due to the ongoing unrest in Assam, we are offering rescheduling/ cancellation fee waiver to all passengers travelling to/from Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat till December 14 at no charge. We’re reviewing the situation and will provide real-time updates on our social platforms.” SpiceJet sent a tweet at 11.51am offering offering full refund and waiver of cancellation/change fee (Fare Difference applicable) for all flights to/from Guwahati and Dibrugarh for travel till December 13th.
