Coimbatore airport sees fall in passenger traffic

Coimbatore International Airport has seen a fall in both passenger and freight traffic since the beginning of the fiscal year due to the grounding of Jet Airways.
However, with Air India and private airlines like Indigo and Spice Jet adding destinations and increasing their flights, airport authorities say the flight traffic is slowly limping back to normalcy. Frequent fliers and stakeholders in the city hope that at least one more flight would be added to a new international destination, further improving the numbers.

According to data in the Airport Authority of India website, the number of passengers who flew in and out of the city in October this year was 4,000 lesser than last year. While the airport recorded a traffic of 2.35 lakh people this year, it had recorded 2.39 lakh people last year. The first half of the financial year however has recorded 5.5% drop in traffic. It has dropped from 17.08 lakh passengers to 16.15 lakh passengers. “There was a loss of traffic due to our loss of Jet Airways flights,” airport director N Mahalingam said. “Because if flights are not available, people cannot fly even if they are willing to and can afford to,” he said.

Coimbatore airport is not the only airport to record a drop-in passenger traffic. At least seven airports, including Chennai, have recorded a decrease in fliers.
