Full service Vistara to have few aircraft in all-economy seating

New Delhi: With budget flying completely dominating India’s domestic skies, Vistara is going to have some aircraft in all-economy configuration in its fleet to be deployed on routes with low demand for premium classes of travel.

To be sure, Vistara is going to remain a full service carrier (FSC) with premium classes of travel like business/premium economy and will have a few planes in all-economy like other FSCs Air India has; and Jet Airways and Kingfisher had.

“Only one of our 39 aircraft in operation at present is configured in all economy class. It tends to be deployed on routes with weaker demand for front cabins or on seasonal leisure routes. We may have more such aircraft in the future to serve these routes, however, aircraft configuration is not to be confused with business model. Service delivered across our fleet will be full-service, regardless of the configuration,” said a Vistara spokesperson.

How Vistara’s all-economy move plays out and whether it confuses flyers remains to be seen. The airline is currently facing a unique issue with the “lite” fares it launched last September. Passengers opting for this lowest level of economy fare do not get a complimentary meal like others who have bought the higher levels of economy or premium economy/ business class tickets. Lite passengers have to buy meals on board.
