International flyer movement up in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Improved connectivity, more direct flights to newer destinations from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad, has led to a significant increase in international passenger movements. According to data given by Airport Authority of India (AAI), international tourist arrivals at the SVPI airport in Ahmedabad went up by 16% in 2019, with some 24.09 lakh international passengers moving in and out of the city airport during the year. The number of international passengers handled at the SVPI airport in Ahmedabad stood at 20.6 lakh in 2018.
“The connectivity to international destinations has tremendously improved from SVPI airport. We now have direct flights to destinations such as Turkey, whereas direct connectivity to existing destinations has increased significantly. Moreover, some of the airlines have upgraded with higher seating capacity aircraft and others plan to do so. As a result, the overall passenger movement has increased significantly and will further go up,” said Manoj Gangal, director, SVPI airport.

Travel experts also attribute the growth in passenger movement to the heritage city status conferred upon Ahmedabad; in addition to a slew of foreign investments that have taken shape.
“Several foreign companies have invested in Gujarat and most of them are in and around Ahmedabad, as a result of which, movement of international business delegates has significantly increased at the city. This number is growing year on year and is visible with several hotels in the city hosting international guests,” said a city-based tour operator.
