Gold, US dollars seized at airport, man arrested

Mangaluru: Customs at Mangaluru International Airport, late on Tuesday, arrested Moideen Arzan, 23, a passenger from Uppala in Kasaragod, on charges of attempting to smuggle gold.
Arzan, who had arrived from Dubai by Air India flight IX814, was attempting to smuggle gold in paste form, which was concealed within rubber capsules inside his rectum.
Joannes George, joint commissioner of customs, said the gold on purification resulted in the recovery of 619g of yellow metal of 24 karat purity valued at Rs 26.3lakh.
Customs produced Arzan before the CJM court in Mangaluru, George said.
Late on Monday night, customs at MIA seized $16,400 from Atiqurahiman, 32, from Bhatkal, when he attempted to smuggle the foreign currency to Dubai on board a SpiceJet flight.
Foreign currency notes equivalent to Rs 11.6 lakh was concealed in biscuit packets kept in his check-in baggage, George added.
