NPRAAF questions govt on new airport site

Dimapur: The Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) on Sunday questioned the state government on its proposed move for a new airport site.
Kohima Deputy Commissioner Gregory Thejawelie had notified that additional land measuring 368.5201 acres at Ciethu, Chiechama under Kohima District is required for acquisition/outright purchase for the Ciethu-Chiechama Airport.
In this connection, the DC had notified claim/objection over the said area, to be submitted within a period of 30 days, with effect from the issue date of notification i.e. February 24.
NPRAAF, in its statement, asked the state government whether Airport Authority of India (AAI) issued feasibility report for the said area of land before proposing outright purchase or acquisition.
It reminded that in 2006, a land measuring 600 acres was acquired for setting up an airport.
However, the acquired area had two hillocks, which had to be knocked down and levelled and huge retaining wall had to be raised on both sides, incurring heavy expenditure for an airport of a small aircraft. In this regard, the planning commission turned down the proposal during 2007-2012 on the ground that the said area or site was technically and financially not feasible and worthy for an airport.
In 2015, the Government of Nagaland again proposed Ruzaphema village site for an alternative airport to Dimapur. Subsequently, a technical team from Airport Authority of India (AAI) came and conducted aerial and ground survey of the proposed land for airport.
Thereafter, the AAI issued a feasibility report with a remark that the proposed airport has the potential to be one of the best airports in the country.
“Surprisingly the same site to set up an airport has not been expedited for larger interest of the state and nation at large,” the NPRAAF statement read.
The NPRAAF questioned the state government as to  why  a ‘technically unworthy site’ was prioritized over a technically feasible site for airport and under what scheme and account of the government the land compensation would be paid off to the land owner(s).
