Air India tweaks refund policy again, full refund for cancelled flights post May 25

Air India has tweaked its refund policy for cancelled flights for the third time within a week. The national carrier will provide the option of full refund to passengers whose scheduled flights between March 23 and May 31 were cancelled.

Air India said that full refund will only be provided to those passengers whose flights were scheduled post May 25 and got cancelled.

"Further, if passengers have booked for flights post May 25, which have been cancelled, he/she is eligible for refund, cancellation charges will stand waived and passengers will be allowed for full refund," Air India added in the latest communication.
According to EaseMyTrip, Air India would have unused tickets worth over Rs 500 crore value, and almost 70-80 percent people will opt for refunds. Rest 20-30 percent people would have booked tickets in low/sales fare so they will keep their ticket open for use, it added.

"Air India has begun providing refunds to its customers though through a complex process that takes 60-75 days and involves travel companies submitting manual applications for refunds. Both these moves will help enhance perception of customers on Air India and restore their belief in them," Nishant Pitti of EaseMyTrip said.

However, in case of passenger requesting a change of routing, only the rerouting charges will be waived but applicable difference of fare will be charged. In such cases, no down-selling will not be permitted.

Who hold confirmed tickets for travel between March 23 and May 31, the airline will allow them to book in available flights between May 25 and Aug 24 with no extra charge.

"On resumption of select Domestic Flights from 25th May 2020, it has been decided that any passenger holding Air India confirmed tickets with travel dates during the lockdown period i.e 23rd March 2020 to 31st May 2020 and have had their flight cancelled will be allowed to book in available flights for the period 25th May 2020 till 24 August 2020 at no extra charge," explained Air India.
