Gold, foreign currencies seized from six passengers at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport seized 1.62 kg of gold, worth Rs 81.4 lakh, and 7,500 euros (Rs 6.6 lakh) from six passengers in the last two days. They arrested one of the passengers.

On Saturday, Zahir Hussain, 40, of Chennai, who was to board an IndiGo flight (6E-65) to Dubai was intercepted at the departure terminal on suspicion that he was carrying foreign currencies. On examination of his backpack, euro notes to the tune of 7,500 (in the denomination of 50) were recovered from him. The currencies were seized under the Customs Act, 1962 read with the Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of currency) (Amendment) Regulations, 2015 as he had not declared the same.

The customs also detected five cases of gold smuggling by passengers who arrived from Dubai.

Mohamed Idrish, 25, of Trichy, Mohamed Irfan, 36, and Liyakath Ali, 36, both of Ramanathapuram, who arrived here in a flydubai flight (FZ 8517), were intercepted and searched. Seven bundles of gold paste weighing 1.52 kg were recovered from their rectums. On extraction, 1.33 kg of gold of 24k purity valued at Rs 67.1 lakh was recovered and seized. Mohamed Idrish was arrested.

Abubackar Sithik, 21, of Chennai and Syed Abuthahir, 21, of Ramanathapuram who arrived here in an Air India Express flight (IX-1644) were intercepted and searched. Four gold paste strips (two from each), weighing 341 gram, were found ingeniously stitched in the bottom parts of their jeans . On extraction, 285 gram of gold of 24K purity valued at Rs 14.3 lakh was recovered and seized.
