Officials of DRI seized 1.2kg gold, 2 held

Mangaluru: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials detained two passengers who landed from Dubai to Mangaluru International Airport, and seized 1.2kg of gold valued at Rs 67 lakh from their possession.

The anti-smuggling operation was carried out on Monday night.

According to officials, two residents of Bhatkal and Kasaragod, arrived from Dubai by SpiceJet Flight SG 146.

Acting on a tip-off, tThe DRI team quizzed the duo after which they confessed to trying to smuggle gold.

Both the persons were found to be carrying gold in the form of paste, which is a novel modus operandi adopted by smuggling syndicates, to bypass customs at the airport.

They added that the accused from Bhatkal had concealed five balls containing gold paste wrapped in adhesive paste, in his rectum.

The balls weighed a total of 809g, and upon extraction, yielded 641.4g of gold.

The other passenger hailing from Kasaragod, Kerala, was found concealing gold in paste form, in his inner wear, with a special pouch to conceal the gold. The gold paste carried by him weighed 1,008g, and upon extraction, yielded 646.7g of gold.

DRI sources confirmed the bust, in which more than 1.2kg of gold was seized from the two accused.
