Mopa locals oppose more land acquisition plans for airport road

Mapusa: The situation in Pernem town on Friday remained tense after farmers from Mopa gathered in large numbers to protest the proposed additional land acquisition for the link road to the Mopa airport.

Work on the link road is presently under way.

The protesting locals said they will not allow any additional land to be acquired for the airport as the government had already taken up a sufficiently large area for the project.

Sources said that the survey work for the proposed acquisition was underway on Friday. At first, the locals gathered at the site and registered their protest. Police then booked an offence against locals, Suryakant Chodankar and Jitendra Gaonkar, for obstructing government work. This led to the aggrieved villagers gathering at the police station to condemn the act of the government and the police of booking offences against the protesters airing their view.

GFP’s Kiran Kandolkar, who visited Pernem to show his support to the locals, alleged that the government was acquiring the land not to facilitate the airport project, but for vested interests.

“The additional land acquisition for the road is not for the airport work, but to help investors from outside Goa, who have purchased huge plots of land for hotel projects. We condemn the act of the police. What happened to the complaints that the farmers had filed with the police earlier over the illegal grabbing of their land?” he said.
