UP set to take over seven villages for third Jewar airport runway

Greater Noida: The district administration will soon begin the process of taking physical possession of 1,365-hectare land in seven villages of Greater Noida for the development of the third runway of Noida International Airport. On January 25, the UP Cabinet notified the land acquisition for the third runway. The greenfield airport, one of the country’s biggest new infrastructure projects, will have a total of five runways.

Officials said the seven villages are Karauli Bangar, Kureb, Berampur, Mundhera, Nangla Shahpur, Ranhera and Dayanatpur. The third runway has to be added as a part of the stage II development of the project’s phase I. Work on development of the first and second runways over an area of 1,334 hectares is expected to commence by July this year, officials said.

Additional district magistrate (land acquisition) Balram Singh said the process to hire services of experts to conduct a social impact assessment study (SIA) will be initiated soon.

“Once SIA report is available and surveys are conducted, we will come to know how many houses and families are getting impacted in the seven villages. The state government will provide us funds to purchase the land. The circle rate of these villages is higher than the six villages that had been taken earlier but the final compensation amount will be finalised only when all other formalities get over,” said Singh.

Since a distance of at least 1,035 metres will have to be maintained to allow simultaneous landing and take-off from the parallel runways as per the International Civil Aviation Organisation guidelines, the third runway cannot be housed within the stage I area.

“We have to keep a buffer of at least 1.50km to 2km from the existing two runways while planning the third one. The land will be acquired for it and handed over to the subsidiary of Zurich AG,” said Shailendra Bhatia, nodal officer of Noida International Private Limited, the special purpose vehicle of the UP government set up to develop the airport.
