Delhi-Dubai currently world’s second-busiest international route

Delhi-Dubai is the second busiest international air route in the world right now, providing a much-needed boost for UAE carriers after the UK market was all but cut off earlier this month following Britain’s ‘red list’ ruling.

The UK government’s decision to add the UAE to Britain’s travel ‘red list’ caused the usually popular Dubai-Heathrow route lose its place as the world’s busiest international route in February.

But data from OAG shows that Dubai remains a central hub in February 2021, with 129,683 seats scheduled on the popular Delhi-Dubai route, putting it just behind Orlando-San Juan.

India and the UAE have an air travel bubble agreement in place, allowing free travel between the two countries. Routes like Delhi-Dubai are very important for UAE carriers now as airlines like Emirates and Etihad seek to redeploy capacity lost on lucrative UK routes.

India in 2020 was the top destination country for DXB by passenger numbers, with traffic reaching 4.3 million over the year, followed by the United Kingdom with 1.89 million customers. The top three cities were London (1.15 million customers), Mumbai (772,000 customers) and Delhi with 722,000 customers.

According to an Indian airline boss, the UAE’s vaccine rollout is increasing confidence among passengers and is boosting demand on routes between India and the UAE.

Vinod Kannan, chief commercial officer of Vistara, said recently that the carrier’s India-UAE route network has grown overall during the pandemic “due to the consistently high demand for travel between the two countries – whether for business, tourism or VFR (visiting friends and relatives)”.
