'India remained top destination for Dubai Airport in 2020'

New Delhi: India remained the top destination country for air travellers from Dubai, one of the world’s busiest airports, in pandemic 2020.

According to Dubai Airports, it saw 43 lakh passengers head to India; followed by the United Kingdom with 19 lakh and Pakistan coming with 18 lakh. The top three cities were London (11.5 lakh passengers), Mumbai ( 7.7 lakh) and New Delhi with 7.2 lakh, it said. Delhi-Dubai is the world’s second busiest international route globally at the moment in terms of seat capacity deployed by airlines, according to UK-based aviation firm OAG.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) saw 2.6 crore passengers in 2020, a 70% decline from 2019. Last April commercial flights were stopped there due to the pandemic. Then on June 23, 2020, UAE airspace was officially re-opened and travel to Dubai for tourism was allowed from July 7, 2020. Since then traffic has been gradually reviving.

“From a markets and destination perspective, the recovery is strong. There are now 142 destinations (61% recovery) served from DXB in 80 markets (85% recovery) on 56 airlines (75% recovery)…. India retained its position as the top destination country for DXB by passenger numbers,” Dubai Airports said in a statement.
