Taxi services at airport not disrupted

Vasco: Taxi services at the Goa international airport remained uninterrupted on Thursday despite the taxi association extending support to the state-wide strike called by the taxi association.

Few members of the United Taximen Union (UTU) at the airport are likely to join the strike in Panaji, on Friday.

Former president of the UTU and member of its care-taker committee Sandeep Shetye said, “We are fully supporting the strike called by the taxi association across the state, but we cannot stop our services. Our permit defines our services as essential services, which cannot be brought to a halt. If at all we want to go on strike, we have to give prior notice to the authorities.”

Shetye said that initially the taximen were scared to get their taxis on road as they thought it may upset drivers in other parts of Goa. The association has 350 yellow-black taxis and operates at the airport.
