UK Government warned over airport Covid tests after ‘multiple’ scams in India

The British Government has been urged to tighten its airport Covid checks after a series of scams emerged in India.

A number of frauds relating to bogus testing have been identified in the country, which is on the UK’s travel red list and was where the rapidly-spreading Delta variant was first identified.

One expert who has assisted law enforcement officials told Metro.co.uk that the scams currently under investigation could be the tip of the iceberg.

Rogue laboratories which allegedly mass produce Covid test results for financial gain or to meet government targets have been identified and are subject to high-level investigations.

Cybercrime consultant Mukesh Choudhary, who is based in Jaipur, capital of the north-western Rajasthan state, warned that the UK needs to introduce stricter controls on the way it checks all travellers entering the country.

Mr Choudhary told Metro.co.uk: ‘Multiple incidents have been identified since the first wave in India and different types of cases have been identified.

‘In most cases, it concerns people having samples picked up from home in order to have a PCR report.

‘There have been labs which were collecting samples but then providing fake reports.

‘In these examples, they were expecting a genuine report but they received a fake report because those labs were not certified and they needed to generate high volumes of tests in a short time period to make money.

‘Another example is people wanting to travel through Covid restrictions with fake certificates.
