Ayikkarapadi (Malappuram): Domestic airlines in India refused to air-lift from Mumbai the body of a Keralite merchant navy officer who died of Covid in Senegal because the coffin was not covered with silver foil.
The body of Vineeth Krishnan, 32, was brought by Air France, adhering to Covid-19 protocols. However thereafter no domestic flights from there were ready to provide further service.
A second officer, Vineeth, was on a ship, owned by Atlanta Private Limited, which was heading towards the USA from Dubai. It had to anchor at Dakar port of Senegal for repair. Vineeth succumbed to Covid-19 in a hospital there on July 20. The body was brought to India with the helpful interventions of Union Minister V Muraleedharan, MP M K Raghavan and KMCC Senegal.
The Ship company then arranged the coffin (still uncovered with silver foil because of difficulties in the process) to be transported by road which delayed the cremation by one and a half days. The Merchant Navy Officers’ Association has protested against the action taken by the airline companies.However, Air India clarified that covering the coffin with silver foil was mandatory as per Covid-19 protocols.
