Chennai: AAI gears up to prevent 2015 floods re-run

Chennai: The monsoon is a mere month away and the city airport is readying to prevent strong winds and rain from disrupting flights and preventing flooding of runways and taxiways.

A series of steps are being taken following discussions at a meeting held by the state government with the airport last week to prepare for the monsoon, said a senior official of AAI.

Airport authorities have begun desilting of storm water drains in neighbourhoods adjacent to the airport, while the desilting of Adyar river near the second runway bridge is nearing completion.

A senior official of AAI said that low lying areas near the runways have been levelled, foliage in the basic strip of runways and taxiways have been trimmed. Apart from this, the ground staff and airline staff have been told to fasten light materials and also ground handling equipment like trolleys, pushback vehicles, ladders and others to prevent them from moving astray in strong wind. The staff have been briefed to ensure mooring of small aircraft too.
