Kochi: Seven, including Air India cabin crew member, arrested for gold smuggling

Nedumbassery: Customs Air Intelligence arrested seven people, including a flight attendant, with three kilograms of gold at Kochi International Airport.

The alleged smugglers, including a woman, were arrested on Sunday. Amodh Samant, a Mumbai native and Air India senior cabin crew member, was arrested with 1.400 kg of gold. Samant was part of the crew of the Air India flight that came from London to Kochi on Sunday morning.

After landing in Kochi, he rested at a hotel in Palarivattom and then at night, he came to board an Air India flight to Mumbai airport from Kochi. His luggage was checked by the CISF and discovered the gold. He was later handed over to Customs. He had four gold blocks in the shape of bangles. The seized gold is worth Rs 70 lakh. Severe action will be taken against him.

According to him, the gold was handed over to him by someone in Kochi. However, he did not reveal the name or phone number of the transferee. Customs concluded after checking the CCTV footage that the gold may have been smuggled from London. Customs suspect that he brought the gold outside the airport with the help of some staff.
