SpiceJet to offer onboard WiFi on Boeing 737 Max, will bar WhatsApp calls on them: Ajay Singh

Gwalior: SpiceJet will by early next year offer onboard WiFi on the Boeing 737 Max.

Union aviation minister J M Scindia, Boeing India president Salil Gupte and airline CMD Ajay Singh were among those on a special Max flight from Delhi to Gwalior on Tuesday, a move seen as a confidence building measure in this aircraft as it will now be used for commercial domestic and international flights by the airline.

"Two of the 13 Max with us are flying again (after the required changes for ensuring safety). The other 11 will start flying by mid-December. We will offer onboard WiFi on the Max and have tied up with Inmarsat for that. WhatsApp calls will be barred to avoid inconvenience to fellow passengers. Initially this will be a free service and eventually become a paid one," Singh said.

SpiceJet hopes to have 50 Max in its fleet by the end of 2023.

"We will phase out all the old fuel inefficient jet engine planes in our fleet. As of now we use about 35 B737s. We will replace 20 of them and the additional 30 will be for fleet augmentation. So we are looking at having about 65 B737 in our fleet in just over two years," Singh said.
