Man refuses to remove costly watch for screening at Kempegowda International Airport

Bengaluru: High drama prevailed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday evening after a man refused to remove his wristwatch, which he claimed was very expensive, and place it on the tray for the mandatory scanning of passengers' belongings by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The situation held up security checks for a brief period before officials arrived and screened the timepiece citing security protocol.

According to sources in the security team at KIA, the incident occurred around 5.45pm when the Delhi-bound passenger, who was scheduled to board a Vistara flight, reached the CISF security ring at the airport where passengers must undergo frisking and scanning of hand-held luggage.

"As per rules, all boarding passengers must place electronic and metal items, including watches, cellphones and belts, and in some cases even shoes, on the security belt for computer scan by CISF personnel. The male passenger was asked to place his wristwatch on the security tray but he vehemently refused," said the source.

The man is said to have shouted at the CISF personnel on duty in Hindi stating that he will not remove the watch from his wrist as it is worth Rs 40 lakh and could be stolen during the check. The passenger's adamant behaviour stalled the security screening for a while. Senior CISF officers reached the spot as he flaunted his contacts in places in Delhi and demanded that he get security clearance wearing his expensive wristwatch.

What rules say

As per Bureau of Civil Aviation Security guidelines 2020, passenger items with over 30 grams of metal will be flagged on a door frame metal detector, which is used at airports including KIA. Meanwhile, the hand-held metal detector can catch as much as 0.5gm of metal content in an object when screened.

"In this case, it was the duty of the CISF personnel to scan the watch as it was beeping in the passenger's possession," the officer added.
