Pune airport’s daily passenger traffic improves, crosses 20,000-mark

Pune: The daily passenger traffic at the city airport has climbed steadily in the past few days to around 20,000, indicating that fears of Omicron have not stopped people from travelling yet.

On December 24, the total passenger movement at the airport stood at 22,500, the highest since flights resumed operation in May last year after the first lockdown. Similarly, on December 23, the total passenger movement at the airport stood at 20,450.

On December 26, the traffic stood at 21,103. And on December 20, the daily passenger traffic was 20,443. Then, on December 12, the traffic was 20,328.

“On December 23 and 24, the total flight movements at the airport were 140 and 144, respectively.

Crossing the 20,000-passenger mark is imthe flight movements have increased after the airport became round-the-clock operational from December 1 after more than a year. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, around 28,000 to 30,000 passeng- ers travelled daily while the total flight movements were around 170,” an airport official said.

Airport officials had earlier said that once the facility became operational round the clock after the runway recarpeting work, passenger traffic would witness a major climb, touching pre-pandemic levels by early next year. But since December1, the daily passenger traffic on most days remained limited to 15,000 to 18,000 despite increase in the number of flights.
