Land for greenfield airport at Bihta not possible: Govt

Patna: The stalemate over Bihta airport plan for commercial flight operations continues. While the Airports Authority of India (AAI) requires 199 acre more land for development of an international greenfield airport at Bihta airbase, the government on Monday ruled out any such possibility. The AAI needs more land even for floating a tender and commencement of work for the civil enclave and runway alignment.

KS Vijayan, general manager (engineering), projects, AAI-Patna, said they are waiting for 8 acre more land from the state government and approval from the public investment board to commence the work even as per previous plan. “Only after that, we will be able to call the tender,” he said.

Recently, civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia had asked the states to provide additional land for construction of greenfield airports. During the Parliament session, he also said Bihar government needs to identify an alternate site for construction of a greenfield airport in case of non-availability of required land at Bihta. The AAI has made requisition for an additional 191.5 acre land for runway extension and installation of approach light and 8 acres for city-side development to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft for international operations from the airport.
