Drugs worth Rs 59 crore seized at Mumbai airport, one Zimbabwean passenger held

Mumbai: In yet another crackdown on the illegal drug menace, the Customs department at the Mumbai International Airport foiled yet another attempt by a passenger to transport drugs.

As per the officials of the Mumbai Airport Customs department, there was specific information that a Zimbabwean lady was carrying drugs in person.

“On the basis of intelligence developed by our officers and constant focus on African passengers, one Zimbabwean lady passenger, Rosie, arrived from Harare to Mumbai via Kigali via RwandAir Flight WB-500 on February 12. Examination of the baggage of the passenger resulted in the recovery and seizure of 7006 grams of yellowish powder tested as “heroin” and 1480 grams of white crystal granules tested to contain a combination of “heroin” and “methamp," an official said.

The officials said that the seized Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) collectively weighing 8.486 kgs were ingeniously concealed inside the trolley bag, in the executive bag and two file folders, and the same is valued at approximately Rs. 59,40,20,000 in the illicit market.

Further, the passenger told the officials that the drugs were handed over to her in Harare and the same were to be delivered in New Delhi. She was offered free medical treatment in India in lieu of the same.
