Domestic fliers from Nashik region pick Shirdi

Nashik: A section of the domestic air travellers of the Nashik region are opting to travel via Shirdi rather than Mumbai.

Some travel agents of Nashik said some domestic fliers prefer the Shirdi airport as the travel time by road to the airport is shorter when compared to travelling to Mumbai Airport. “The distance between Shirdi airport and Nashik is around 85 km and takes less than two hours to reach the airport. But in the case of Mumbai Airport, the distance from Nashik is over 170 km and takes over three hours. Moreover, one has to remember about the traffic snarls to enter Mumbai,” said some travel agents.

Datta Bhalerao, the former president of the Travel Agents Association of Nashik, said around 20 to 30% of his customers prefer to travel via Shirdi rather than Mumbai to take flights.

“I prefer to travel to Delhi via Shirdi Airport rather than the Mumbai Airport. One can reach Shirdi much faster as compared to Mumbai,” said Hemant Godse, Nashik city MP, stressing on the dire need of the Union government to improve air connectivity from Nashik Airport.

The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) manages Shirdi Airport and is connected to important destinations like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Tirupati.

“The daily footfall of fliers at Shirdi Airport is over 2000. After the night landing is allowed at the airport, the footfall will further increase as more flights to newer destinations will start operating. ,” MADC sources said.

Unlike Shirdi Airport, the air connectivity from Nashik Airport is limited as it is connected only to Pune, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Belagavi.
