Ugandan man swallows 63 capsules containing 794 gm heroin, held at Chennai airport

Chennai: Chennai Air Customs seized 794.64 grams of heroin worth Rs 5.56 crore and arrested a Ugandan man who had swallowed 63 capsules containing heroin.

It was on May 17 at around 4.30 AM, that a passenger identified as Lauben Mbangire (42) who had arrived at the city airport from Sharjah was intercepted by Air Intelligence Officers of the Chennai Customs.

Subsequently, a search and a medical examination was conducted which led to the recovery of 794.64 grams of heroin worth Rs 5.56 crore. The passenger had swallowed 63 capsules containing ivory coloured powder material later found to be heroin.

A total of 794.64 grams of heroin with an estimated value of Rs 5.56 crore was seized from the passenger.

Meanwhile, the passenger was arrested under the provisions of NDPS Act, 1985 read with Customs Act, 1962.
