Flights at Deoghar drome ahead of Shravani, hints AAI

Dumka: The Deoghar airport is likely to become operational ahead of this year’s Shravani Mela, Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Sanjiv Kumar said on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons here after conducting a meeting with district officials, Kumar said, “In all likelihood, Deoghar airport will start operating domestic flights in a few months’ time.”

Shravani Mela is held between July and August and during that time thousands of pilgrims throng the Babadham temple every year. “This time pilgrims coming to Doghar from far-off states during Shravani Mela can take flights as steps are being taken to get the airport ready by then,” Godda MP Nishikant Dubey, with whom the AAI chairman had a meeting, said.

On Thursday, Kumar inspected different installations at the upcoming airport, including the air traffic control system and the runway and supervised other preparations.

The foundation stone for the Rs 401-crore-airport was laid in 2018 and it is being jointly developed by AAI, Jharkhand government and the Defence Research and Development Organization. Spread over 653.75 acres, the airport’s terminal building is being built over 4,000sqm.

Once it starts operating, the Deoghar airport will be the second airport in Jharkhand after the Birsa Munda International airport in Ranchi.
