Fresh order for bomb detectors hints at seaplane relaunch in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The signs that seaplane services may be set for a relaunch are becoming more evident now with Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited (GujSAIL), which was overseeing the operations of the service, placing a request for supply of Explosive Trace Detectors (ETDs) at the aerodrome on Sabarmati Riverfront.

Sources in the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) told TOI that GujSAIL would oversee the induction of a pre-owned Cessna Grand Caravan 208 amphibious aircraft, with a new operator. It must be noted that the service was suspended on April 10, 2021, after SpiceJet pulled out.

The new ETDs that have been ordered are for aerodromes at SOU in Kevadia, and Sabarmati riverfront.

ETDs are specialized devices at airports that sample "trace" amounts of explosive particulates. In this case the ETD will detect explosives like ammonium nitrate, EGDN, HMTD, HMX, Nitroglycerine (NG), PETN, RDX, TATP, Tetryl, TNT and Urea Nitrate. "We were recently informed by GujSAIL about the ETD installation at the aerodrome as a new amphibious plane is being procured by August end," said the SRFDCL official.
