Flyer hides gold in sanitary pad, held in Cochin International Airport

Kochi: Customs sleuths at the Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) on Thursday seized 582.64gm gold from a passenger who had concealed it in a sanitary pad, the latest example of smugglers getting creative in their attempts to smuggle the yellow metal into the country.

The passenger had used an artificial colouring substance to make the pad look red and claimed that she was menstruating to avoid inspection. The seized gold was valued at around Rs 29,89,235.

“On the basis of profiling, officers of the air intelligence unit intercepted a female passenger at the green channel who arrived from Riyadh to Cochin by Air India flight. On searching the passenger, five gold bars, weighing 582.64gm, ingeniously concealed inside artificially red-coloured sanitary napkins which were worn by the passenger were recovered,” a customs official said.

In a separate incident on Saturday, Customs intercepted a woman passenger at green channel who arrived from Italy via Doha and seized three crude gold bangles weighing 480.25gm concealed inside her hand baggage. Officials said the seized gold was worth Rs 24,63,923.
