Ludhiana-Delhi flight to get new wings

Ludhiana: Days after TOI reported about a private airline planning to start a Ludhiana-Hindon flight in summers, the ministry of civil aviation has confirmed that Ludhiana-Delhi flight will finally take off again from Sahnewal airport after around two years.

According to Airport Authority of India, Hindon airport located in Ghaziabad is the second commercial airport in Delhi NCR after IGI Airport. Hindon airport is 24 kms away from New Delhi railway station.

In an official communication, civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia informed Rajya Sabha MP from Ludhiana Sanjeev Arora that the UDAN route ‘Hindon-Ludhiana-Hindon’ has been awarded to Messrs Big Charters with 19-seater type of aircraft under UDAN 4.2 bidding round, which may commence operation in summer schedule 2023.

According to Arora, Scindia sent the official communication dated January 27, 2023 in reply to his letter written on January 17. The minister further informed Arora that, “He has circulated his request to all airlines for consideration of flights to Ludhiana.”

Arora in his letter to Scidnia said in his previous communication dated December 27, 2022, he requested to resume flight operations to Ludhiana from Sahnewal airport till the time Halwara airport is up and ready.

The AAP MP said there was a flight under UDAN to Ludhiana which was stopped during Covid and never started again. He mentioned, “I along with commoners of Ludhiana sincerely request you to kindly intervene and direct the officials concerned to chalk out a plan and resume flights to Ludhiana under UDAN scheme at the earliest.”

Arora said he is grateful to the minister for considering and acceding to his demand for resuming flights between Ludhiana and Delhi. He said this will prove beneficial for not only business class, but commoners of Ludhiana too.

Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials said it will be great if the flight starts soon.

AAI officials said, “The Ludhiana-Delhi flight had last operated on April 9, 2021 after which it was suspended.”
