Woman duped of Rs11 lakh by cyber crooks

Chandrapur: A trickster posing as a pilot working in Italy duped a woman from Bhadrawati of Rs11.50 lakh through online fraud. Claiming that he has sent an expensive gift, the conman tricked the woman into shelling out Rs11.50 lakh to clear the customs duties at the airport.

The 25-year-old victim came into contact with the trickster through Instagram in October 2022. The accused, posing as Reshan, a pilot working in Italy, befriended the woman. He also promised to marry the woman.

Later, an accomplice of the trickster, posing as a customs official, called the woman in November 2022. He claimed that a parcel from Italy, containing expensive iPhones, wrist watches, gold jewellery, cosmetics, handbag and cash of 1.05 lakh dollars, has been sent for her. He claimed that the parcel is collectively worth Rs86.88 lakh, and she needs to deposit Rs37,000 as clearance charges for its release.

The woman promptly deposited the money. However, the tricksters claiming to be different customs officials continued to harass and threaten the woman of registering offence against her and the boyfriend. They asked the woman to deposit money into different accounts. Over a period of time, they forced the victim to deposit Rs11.35 lakh into their accounts.

Realizing, a bit late, that she has been duped, the woman filed a complaint with the Bhadrawati police and an offence against online tricksters has been registered.
