Chennai man who sought money from flyers at Bengaluru airport for ‘unwell’ dad held

Bengaluru: A Chennai resident who allegedly walked into airports across the country in the guise of a flyer but went around seeking monetary help from other passengers after cooking up the story of his father being sick was nabbed last week from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

Well-dressed in casuals and sneakers, Vignesh R, 27, from Chennai entered KIA on the evening of May 13, 2023 as a genuine passenger with a valid ticket to fly from Bengaluru to Chennai.

“The man’s purpose of entering the airport was not just to fly but to primarily cheat fellow passengers with the concocted story that his father was sick and he needed money for his urgent medical treatment. He managed to pocket a few thousand rupees from gullible passengers before some grew suspicious and alerted CISF staffers on duty. He was caught and handed over to police,” an investigating officer attached to KIA police station said. Vignesh has managed to get bail.

Investigators suspect Vignesh orchestrated a similar fraud at KIA in mid-2022 as well. “He is a habitual offender and a similar modus operandi is suspected to have been used by him in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and other airports in the country. But no passenger had come forward to lodge a complaint against him,” said a senior police officer.

Vignesh is known to have briefly worked with a private company in Bengaluru and managed to secure 26 bank cards, including credit and debit, in his name.

He’s suspected to have been operating in Bengaluru since 2022 and is known to have tricked and duped a young passenger to the tune of Rs 8,000 with the story that he had lost his belongings and needed money to take the next flight for a job interview. The matter is under investigation and so is his possession of the 26 cards (from various banks) which remain active, sources said.
