Fresh DPR to be submitted for expansion of Mys airport

Mysuru: Mysuru MP Pratap Simha on Friday said that a fresh detailed project report (DPR) will be submitted to the Union government for expansion of the runway at the Mysuru airport to 3.2 km to facilitate operation of long-haul flights.

Presently, the airport has a 2.7-km long runway, which limits its ability to operate wider bodied aircraft. Speaking to reporters after holding a progress review meeting with officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Simha said that Shivamogga airport has been built on 775 acres of land at the cost of Rs 449.22 crore. The runway is 3.2-km long, and the passenger terminal has a built-up area of 4,320 sqft. Shivamogga airport can handle aircraft ranging from the ATR 72 to the Airbus A320.

“If a city like Shivamogga is having a bigger airport, then Mysuru which is rapidly developing in all areas also needs a similar airport to run long-haul flights to connect to major cities, mainly metros, in view of its future growth,” he stated.

Expansion of the runway and Mysuru-Nanjangud National Highway widening are crucial for promotion of trade and commerce and to boost tourism, industries for employment generation, he said.

An additional 240 acres of land is required and the KIADB is involved in the acquisition of land, the BJP MP said.

As Mysuru airport runway is to be extended, he said additionally 92 acres of land has to be acquired by the state government and it should be handed over to AAI to facilitate the work.
