Airport gears up to tackle waterlogging

Guwahati: Dewatering pumps will come to the rescue if incessant rain poses a threat to flight operations in northeast’s biggest airport, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

The Guwahati airport has got two dewatering pumps installed in the airfield to save the runway from getting inundated, while two more submersible pumps are on standby.

The drainage system on the airport campus is being cleared after monsoon rain submerged the parking area this season too. Airport sources said in the past, there were instances when flight operations were affected after water inundated the runway.

There have been several instances in the last one decade when the parts of the airport campus got submerged due to heavy downpour.

“This year till date there was no flood at the airside due to dewatering facilities and temporary drainage facilities.

These pumps will take 4 to 24 hours to completely dewater the space depending on the level of waterlogging in the area and intensity of rain,” a spokesperson for the airport told TOI on Saturday.
