Chennai: The ministry of civil aviation has forwarded the request for first stage site clearance to set up a greenfield airport in Parandur near Chennai to Airports Authority of India, aviation regulator DGCA and the ministry of defence. “After completion of this consultation with stakeholders, the proposal is required to be placed before the Steering Committee on Greenfield Airports for their recommendation, with respect to award of site clearance,” said minister of state for civil aviation V K Singh, in response to a question by DMK MP D M Kathir Anand in the Lok Sabha.
The state government has identified 4,500 acres for the proposed airport at Parandur.
A consultant has been identified to prepare a techno economic feasibility of setting up a new airport at the location. The government wants to develop the new airport into an aerotropolis by which the region will be developed with the airport as its centre.
