Budget airline Indigo Monday launched its latest route connecting Rajkot and Pune — the first direct flight between the two cities.
“Today, a new flight Rajkot-Pune-Rajkot was welcomed with a water cannon salute at Rajkot Airport,” the Rajkot airport announced on its Twitter handle. With this, the number of flights operating out of the Rajkot airport has gone up to 10.
“The airline (Indigo) will operate the flight six days-a-week. Save Saturdays, the flight will arrive in Rajkot from Pune at 9 am and depart from Rajkot for Pune at 10 am every day,” said Rajkot airport director Diganta Borah. The city airport already handles five daily flights to Mumbai, two to Delhi and one each to Goa, Bengaluru and Surat. The flight to Surat is non-scheduled, while that to Goa is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Rajkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry president VP Vaishnav said the flight will benefit industries, businesses, students community and tourists. “The auto-parts manufacturing industry is connected to the auto-manufacturing industry of Pune. Also, many tourists from Rajkot visit Pune and nearby tourist spots and vice-versa. There is students’ movement. So, we had been demanding a direct flight between Rajkot and Pune,” Vaishnav told The Indian Express.
