‘Noida airport will have a western and an eastern side with road, rail links for both’

Christoph Schellmann, CEO of Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), the Zurich AG subsidiary which is building the Noida airport, says the company is working closely with the UP government for rail and road connectivity.

The possibility of a bus service like the one in Bangalore is also under consideration, he says in an interview. Excerpts:

Under the state support agreement, what are the specific connectivity projects promised by the government for access to the Noida International Airport?

Connectivity is very important. Fundamentally, it’s at the heart of what we do. And one of the things that we’re really encouraged about is that there is such a broad appreciation among various stakeholders in this project of the importance not just of air connectivity but also multimodal ground connectivity to and from the airport. We signed the state support agreement with the government of UP in March 2021.

We’ve been working with the government since before the signing of the agreement as part of our master plan to sort of agree on how this airport will be connected to its catchment area, to Noida, to western UP, to Delhi and the (rest of) NCR.

The site was very well selected for the airport. So, the airport site per se is very well connected. It’s almost adjacent to the Yamuna Expressway. So, you know, taking you to Noida in maybe 45 minutes, Greater Noida in 25 minutes, taking you to the Taj Mahal itself in two hours. So, the Yamuna Expressway will be certainly the lifeline of the airport initially.
