Kochi: Customs air intelligence unit (AIU) sleuths at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) foiled yet another bid to smuggle in gold through the airport.
Customs intercepted a passenger, Muhammed of Koduvally, and recovered 422g of gold from his baggage. The seized gold has an estimated value of Rs 21.85 lakh.
Customs said the passenger was intercepted on the basis of profiling done by AIU officers. The passenger landed at Cial from Kuwait by flight 6E1238 on August 20 and was intercepted at the green channel.
“On screening of his checked-in baggage, the image of a new blender appeared doubtful, and the item was detained for detailed examination. On examination, copper-coloured coil inside the motor was removed and checked. The same was found to be 24 carat gold weighing 422g. The gold along with the blender used for concealment was seized,” officer said.
